The acclaimed Pasanau family consists of perennial growers in Priorat. They own vineyards in the highest municipality of the region, skirting the sheer rock wall of the Sierra de Montsant that forms Priorat’s viticultural boundary. At over 2,400 feet on a three-hectare clearing, the Pasanau’s “Finca la Planeta” vineyard dominates the regional landscape and experiences Priorat’s widest daily temperature variation. The unique localization and composition of Finca la Planeta prompted Ricard Pasanau to plant Cabernet Sauvignon on vines that are now over 20 years old. The climate helps to retain freshness in the concentrated, late-harvested grapes, resulting in a uniquely tight-knit albeit typically powerful Priorat style. Additionally, the vineyard’s llicorella soils and long, arid growing season severely limit yields, packing the fruit with mineral extract and complexity. Pasanau also grows Garnacha, Merlot, Mazuelo and Syrah within the village of La Morera. Ceps Nous, offering great value from Pasanau’s youngest vines, was introduced in 2002.
