Bodegas Mas Alta is the culmination of five Belgium partners’ common desire to produce a great wine that combines the typical characteristics and elegance of the Priorat area. Founded by Michel and Christine Vanhoutte and their associates in 1999, the winery is based in the traditional village of La Vilella Alta and is powered by a tremendous passion for and appreciation of viniculture.
The winery owners are aware of how crucial choice of vineyard is in producing the highly expressive wines they seek, so the 35 hectares have been planted on carefully selected plots, with the majority at altitude, on slate. Depending on the plot’s characteristics, Mas Aalto plants either plant varieties traditional to the region – Carginan and Grenache – or varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz. These vines are aged up to 100 years, so that their deep, well-established roots are able to reach full maturity, greater consistency, and less dependence on climatic conditions. The winery and its team also make sure to purchase their grapes from local village winegrowers, whose old vines have routinely ensured that each vintage’s essence is rooted in Priorat’s traditional heritage.
